Mr Chenang, Desertified Minqin, China

Cotton farmer Mr Chenang lives with his family in the Minqin district of Gansu province. It is a thin oasis of land fenced in by the advancing Tengri and Badrain Jaran deserts. The desertification is relentless, several metres of farmland disappear every year. Without breaking from his cotton picking for 3 Yuan a kilo, Mr Chenang remarks, "The desert is coming closer every year. 25 years ago the situation was very different from now. When I was a boy this area next to Quintu lake was wetland." Land use changes, soil erosion and climate shifts are all causes of desertification. Water scarcity, increasing drought and poorly managed irrigation systems have all led to the water table dropping and are all exacerbated by climate change.
