Working on the edge

In some areas people have been forced from their land by the expanding desert. Many people have left Minqin to resettle elsewhere. They have been forced away by drifting sands and water shortages. Remaining farmers continue to farm using water frugally, growing mostly sugar beat and turnips. This thin oasis of land hemmed in by the Tengri and Badrain Jaran has become a symbol of China's struggle with water resources.
