Methane production

Methane hydrates are similar to ice but the compound consists of methane frozen together with water and locked within a crystal structure. Dr William Dillon from the U.S Geological Survey says 'Hydrates represents such an immense carbon reservoir that it must be considered a dominant factor in estimating unconventional energy resources; the role of methane as a 'greenhouse' gas also must be carefully assessed'.
