Built on stilts

Young students clear rubbish from underneath an apartment block built on stilts. The sinking of large buildings into the ground can be prevented by using stilts extending down to about fifteen meters or more. At this depth the ground temperature does not change with the seasons, remaining a solid -5 °C (23F) bringing stability to Yakutsk, the largest city in the world built on permafrost.
