Peatland roots

Breathing roots stick out of wet ground in the peatland. These roots hold the forest floor together in a deep intertwining network. When the rainforest is transformed into plantations and burnt the vegetation release huge amounts of greenhouse gases and all the nutrients stored in the soil are drained out in streams and lakes. After ten to fifteen years the soil under the new plantations has often lost its nutrients, stability and making the land useless. The planted trees fall and die.
