The Russian tundra has been frozen for as long as humans have walked on earth. Embedded in the permafrost is organic matter (humus) stored which is perfect ground for mould and other micro-organisms when it thaws. When decomposing organic matter these micro-organisms produce methane, the most potent greenhouse gas.
