Surrounding thermokarst

Kirill Serotetto, our Nenets guide from the town of Yar-Sale stands next to a thermokarst lake near his tribes settlement. Thermokarst lakes are formed as ice-rich permafrost thaws and collapses leaving a pool of melt water. In 2007 Kirill and his brother famously found a 6 month old baby mammoth preserved for 10,000 years and exposed by thawing ice layers along the Yuribey river.
