Thermokarst

Depressions full of melt water with mounds of unsupported earth are left after the permafrost melts. Permafrost contains large amounts of organics that decompose when it thaw. NASA climate scientist James E. Hansen has put forward the idea that uncontrollable powerful feedback forces which may cause runaway climate change will be unleashed as methane clathrates in permafrost areas are released by warming.
