Recently destroyed peatland forest outside village Teluk Meranti. The destruction of peatland forest contributes to Indonesia being labelled the third largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, after the US and China. When the forest is removed, carbon uptake is halted. Vast amounts of carbon are then released back into the atmosphere as exposed soil and organic matter rapidly decompose. Indonesia's old growth forests are estimated to hold over 300 tons of carbon per hectare.
