Determined

Carrying sand sacks 11 hours a day gives Shyamali Das a small amount of money for her family, but what motivates her throughout this back breaking work is the hope for a secure future. She is preparing for the coming monsoon season, hoping to protect herself and her family from increasing tidal surges and cyclones by rebuilding the wall. Hundreds of people were killed and more than 22,000 homes were ravaged when cyclone Aila struck the Bay of Bengal in May 2009. If the sea continues to rise these low lying island will be destroyed and the people of Sagar Island forced from their home.
