Gangotri glacier

The Bhagarathi peaks tower above the Gangotri glacier. The ice sheet is today is a little less than 30 kilometres long. Data from 1936–96 show total recession of the Gangotri glacier to be 1147 m, with the average rate of 19 m per year. According to NASA the glacier retreated more than 850 metres during the last 25 years of the 20th century, with an average rate of 34 metres per year.
