Flying helicopter south from Pekanbaru to Jambi, the scale of destruction and deforestation is massive. Small pockets of diverse still intact forest dot the landscape surrounded by freshly charred earth and newly cut channels. Endless rows of palm plantations extend 360 degrees beyond the horizon, further than the eye can make out.
