Threatened by logging

Farmer Simon Pradhan in the partly logged mangrove forest next to his home by the Hooghly river. Many islanders are not aware of the importance of the mangrove forest, cutting them down for fire wood and building materials. Awareness programs supported by the UN and various other organisations such as WWF are currently taking place. These forests are the best natural defence against rising sea level, heavy storms and tidal surges.
