Ten years ago the situation in Minqin worsened as the water table declined, forcing many from their homes in northern parts of the district. The government invested in several different experiments in order to bind the sand, but the experiments proved only to be short-term solutions. The desert is on the move, some of the larger individual dunes can advance by up to 20 meters a year. Remnants of previous attempts to control it lay scattered, sticking out from dunes.
